BREAKING IT DOWN IN A NUTSHELL… GMO . NON-GMO . ORGANIC

Over a year ago our 17 year old son decided to become a vegetarian and we are proud of him for his decision and have been supporting him with his choice. With this change we had to modify our meal plan and our shopping list. Searching for organic and NON-GMO products, we thought NON-GMO products meant healthy but that is not the case. This only means that the food has not had its DNA modified in someway.

WHY GMO

GMO foods were developed to make it easier and less costly for farmers to grow, which makes them cheaper for the consumer. GMO techniques are used to enhance foods’ nutrients, flavor, and appearance. Because we always want it to taste and look good, right? So what is the difference from NON-GMO and Organic?

Non-GMO only means that the product is Not Genetically modified— however it may still have antibiotics, growth hormones, artificial colors and flavors, preservatives, be grown with fertilizers, pesticides and sewage and be radiated to preserve freshness.
Although the FDA states that GMO food’s are safe, the concern of many people is that the consumption of GMO foods containing Antibiotic resistance genes by humans and animals – will create a biological resistance to antibiotic treatments. Many Countries worldwide have banned GMO products.

All Organic products are Non-GMO.
Products with the Organic seal prohibit the use of GMOs, antibiotics, herbicides, toxic chemicals and more. Organic crops cannot be grown with synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or sewage sludge. —Thank goodness ! There are also strict regulations around the humane treatment of animals that bear the USDA organic seal. Animals must eat certified organic feed and cannot be treated with hormones or antibiotics and they must have access to pasture – free range.

Many people feel that “Organic” food is a scam, not the case. To be certified Organic the farm must be compliant for 3 years to get the seal. Organic foods cost more because it cost more to produce and has a shorter shelf life. The takeaway here is make the best food choices you can and prepare your meals with the cleanest products you can afford.
